If psychological thrillers with twisted human behaviour fascinate you, you may surely spend a little time for Nightcrawler which is filled with such scenes. The direction of first time director, Dan Gilroy shows its play with viewers likes.
This is a movie that is made with modest budget that highlights the journalism of contemporary crime with all the devious tricks one would ever think of. The threatening silence of this movie, pierce the fear in ears and minds which is quite often missing in many movies. The sequences of dangerous chases and creepy nights are included by Jake Gyllenhaal (Lou Bloom) the protagonist.
Lou, a sociopath figures out that selling shooting and raw crime footage to nearby newly established news channel is good source of income. He gets himself equipped with a police scanner and a camera he starts for hunting seeking for an untouched crime scene in the night. He starts resorting manipulating and staging crime scenes but end up involved in it. So, can he manage to get himself out of it?
Nightcrowlar is a notorious and a social satire produced in the form of a movie. Voyeurism and the lack of proper ethics are mocked which media most often shamelessly exhibit in real world. Another asset here is the cinematography in this movie. Dan Gilroy being a First-Time Director, proved himself with his edgy execution.
With the best performances in his entire career so far, Gyllenhaal carried the burden on his shoulders and pushed it up all together until he can. So, we can solely give him highest credit for the success he achieved. He managed to prove revelation from his soulless, cold, egotistical, lonely and calculative anti-hero with this movie. The actor involves in and sends shivers straight into the spine of each person with the prolonged prolonged piercing stare of his and of course with his ambiguous intentions. Terrific Scenes of Travis Bickle in the movie Taxi Driver may strike in your minds with Robert De Niro and his being similar appearance in their roles and cast. Quite noticeable weight loss of Jake and further unpleasant look of his psyche and eeriness appears throughout. Indecent proposals of his to Rene Russo who is head of a news channel are found to be cringeworthy. The Reluctant Fundamentalist “Riz Ahmed” worked as a hapless employee of Lou showed his perfectness with his caste in this film. Overall, Nightcrawler is an engaging, intriguing, appalling and tense creating yet strangely funny movie to watch.
